Urine and Stool

Pale or whitish-coloured stool can be an early sign of a liver disease called biliary atresia. These babies may also have yellow skin and eyes (jaundice) lasting longer than the first two weeks of life. Ontario has a screening program to help families screen for biliary atresia in the home, by monitoring their baby's stool colour. If you have concerns that your baby has abnormal pale stool, you can contact Newborn Screening Ontario directly to get help.

Biliary Atresia (BA)

Pale-coloured poop is often an early sign of a liver disease called biliary atresia. Parents/guardians screen for biliary atresia by monitoring their baby’s poop during the first month of life using an infant stool colour card (ISCC). If you have concerns that your baby has abnormal pale stool, you can contact Newborn Screening Ontario directly to get help.
