Postpartum Healthcare Visit

You should plan to see your physician within 4-6 weeks after the birth. If you have been cared for by a midwife, you will have a few regularly scheduled visits after the birth.  Regardless of the care provider, they will assess your physical, emotional, and psychological well-being and answer any questions you have.    If you have physical or emotional well-being issues before your scheduled appointment, please call your health care provider immediately.

If you have had a Cesarean birth, your health care provider may want to see you earlier than 4-6 weeks. They will want to check on your abdominal pain and incision.

It might be helpful to write down your questions before your visit. Some of the other topics that may be discussed at this visit include:

  • When it’s safe to resume sexual activity
  • Physical symptoms such as perineal pain, breast pain, and vaginal bleeding.
  • Options for birth control
  • Exercise, diet and exercises to strengthen your pelvic muscles (Kegal’s)
  • Follow-up for any complications you’ve experienced (diabetes, hypertension, mental health issues etc).
